BMI - physiotherapy

Their experienced chartered physiotherapists offer professional and individual care. Your first visit will involve an assessment of your condition so that a treatment programme can be specifically developed for you. BMI Healthcare offer a wide range of therapies that are often used in combination in a treatment programme.

During an initial consultation a BMI physiotherapist will give you an assessment and recommend a course of treatment or a referral to a consultant. Your GP can be kept informed if you give permission to do so. You do not need a GP referral to access physiotherapy treatment and it is covered by most private medical insurance schemes.

BMI Healthcare’s Chartered Physiotherapists also offer professional treatment and individual care for a wide range of treatments.

Manual therapy

Most physiotherapy will include manual therapy and exercises and other techniques can be used depending on your specific condition or pain.

Manual therapy includes massage, stretching and manipulative techniques to improve your range of joint movement and reduce pain. It can also reduce swelling, mobilise muscles, joints and nerves, and promote blood circulation to improve healing. Physiotherapists will feel your injured or swollen tissues during movement analysis, to examine how your muscles, tendons and joints are moving and working together and to see whether a muscle is in spasm.

Exercise forms an important part of physiotherapy. The aim is to increase your mobility, muscle strength, and general fitness, build core stability, and reduce your symptoms.

Regular, moderate exercise can help many of the conditions that physiotherapists can treat. Your physiotherapist will probably give you a tailored programme of exercises to strengthen particular groups of muscles, or may recommend particular classes such as Pilates.

Gym equipment

The purpose-built physio-gyms at our hospitals let our physiotherapists work with you to provide expert advice and develop an exercise programme which meets your specific needs.

Services include personal training, customised rehabilitation and staff can provide Pilates instruction and core training.

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy is the use of electrical energy to manage pain, rehabilitate muscles and increase the range of motion. TENS is a form of electrotherapy that uses surface electrodes to stimulate nerve fibres, primarily for pain relief. Another form of electrotherapy is called biofeedback. Equipment is used to reveal what is happening internally when you feel pain. This feedback is then used to help you understand how to better control your movements to minimise the pain.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound can be used therapeutically within the physiotherapy session. Ultrasound is very high frequency sound that cannot be heard by the human ear, but can be detected using a machine called an ultrasound scanner.

It is mainly used for soft tissue injuries and more chronic conditions, with a view to promoting healing and relieving pain. It can also be used as a diagnostic tool to look at soft tissue structures and blood vessels.

Women's health (pelvic floor/incontinence)

If you suffer from incontinence, physiotherapy could help reduce or treat your problems. Symptoms can arise as a result of childbirth, menopause, or surgery. At BMI we offer physiotherapy for stress, urged and mixed incontinence using non-invasive pelvic floor exercises.

Pelvic floor exercises can help resolve incontinence problems by strengthening the muscles which support and surround the bladder. There are no side effects, the exercises can strengthen the pelvic floor and reduce the possibility of future complications. In fact, pelvic floor exercises are proven to improve 70 % of cases.

Treating incontinence with simple rehabilitation is now widely supported by healthcare professionals. It is recommended that sufferers undergo at least three months of conservative treatment before considering surgery.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy (aquatic physiotherapy) provides a warm, relaxed atmosphere for treating chronic and acute conditions.

The water temperature of 34°C provides the optimum temperature for muscle relaxation. This helps to decrease pain, increase range of movement and increase muscle activity.

The aim is to gain flexibility of joints, strengthen muscles and enhance core stability to restore or improve function. Patients are accompanied in the pool by a physiotherapist throughout their session. It is not necessary for patients to be able to swim or get their head wet in order to benefit from hydrotherapy.

Pain management

A pain management programme uses a combination of psychological, physical, and practical methods to reduce your pain, physical difficulties and distress, and improve your quality of life.

Physiotherapists can give you advice on moving more easily and avoid muscle wasting and weakness, as well as joint stiffness. This could help you do more and hopefully reduce your pain.

Other methods such as acupuncture, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, relaxation and breathing exercises, aromatherapy, and massage may also be of help. A pain management programme would combine several of these therapies with the aim of reducing your pain.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is offered by physiotherapists in the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). Acupuncture can be used on its own or in combination with physiotherapy to treat a range of musculo-skeletal conditions. Amongst other things, acupuncture may help relieve pain.

There are over 500 acupuncture points on the body. Normally 10-12 acupuncture points are used during an acupuncture session. You may feel a tingling sensation when the needles are inserted, but it should not be painful.
